Small Changes, Big Impact

I just came back from the grocery store with six reusable grocery bags and I am feeling on top of the world.

I have seen these bags circulating but have never taken the chance on purchasing any. For one, they were always a little pricey in my eyes. At about 4 dollars a pop, and considering I would need at least 6 or more, it was always hard for me to justify paying $24 on bags when I could get the plastic ones for free.

Also, I thought it would be a hassel looking after these bags all the time. My car is a mess, the trunk filled with odds and ends such as a half finished bottle of Woodford Reserve, several opened MREs, plain old trash, shoes, and cooking utensils. A lot of these items have been in there since my last camping trip to Red River Gorge. I have to confess, I am the most spastic, unorganized person that has ever lived. I recently found that my undiagnosed (until last summer) Attention Deficit Disorder has been the driving force behind this, and that is fine and all but I still have to function in the world and I have not done a very good job so far.

So today when I was at the grocery store I was looking at cat litter and there was a bin in the middle of the isle full of these reusable bags. I picked one up and right as I convinced myself I should invest in one, I saw the price!  Kroger was apparently having a little special on these bags, 2 for $1! I immediately put 2 in my cart. When I started checking out I realized that I probably needed 2 more to get the groceries out I was purchasing. So, I ran back over to the pet section and grabbed two more, took a couple steps and came back for an additional two. So, short story long, I got my first reusable grocery bags today, and 6 for 3 dollars at that! I can’t tell you how excited I am about these things. I have to be the biggest dork on the planet.

So, I came back to my office (I work at a small business owned by my father) and unloaded my goodies for next week’s lunch. The whole time I felt so proud of myself and my effort to help the environment. I just couldn’t help it. Well, so I put my canned fruit and my tuna fish cans away and felt like I was ready for more.

Now, my next project is gonna be setting up a recycling bin for all of the white paper we dispose of here at the office. I think we have gotten to the point where we throw away enough white paper for recycling it to be worth the extra effort.

I think if we all took small steps like this it would help. You just can’t think of it as “I need to change the world”. You have to start with one responsible choice. After this, you will realize the high you get from doing something important. This high just fuels further endeavors. I know I have a long way to go. I need to clean up my life before I clean up the environment but, as I get older and see the world my children will inherit, I just can’t seem to sit idly by anymore.

So, along with the the recycling at my office I am going to tackle the Woodford Reserve in my trunk. Gotta make room for those grocery bags

Ghost Town Comes Through

Ok, so the other day my husband and I decided to rent some movies from Blockbuster. We haven’t done this in ages considering the last time we forgot to return them and were charged like forty something dollars. But we have been in the process of moving out of our apartment and the TV was gone, the Xbox 360 was packed away and we didn’t even have a bed. So, we rented two comedies to watch on the laptop on one of the last night we were there. One of the movies was a complete disaster and waste of time. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. I don’t even know what to say abou this movie. I hated it. That is all that comes to mind when I think of it. And since this is a blog of all things nice and wonderful in my life I will refrain from going on any further about it.

Now, the other movie we rented was called Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais (from The Office), Tea Leoni, and Greg Kinnear. This movie started off a little stiff but the full beauty of the movie was slowly ripening in the the comic genious of Ricky Gervais’  interaction with Tea Leoni. Now, I did not know what to expect from Ms. Leoni but she felt so real, and composed but also just off enough to be the perfect counter weight to Gervais comedic style. Watching those two was like a breath of fresh air. The whole movie was quite enjoyable and didn’t have the same over the top feel of a lot of movies these days. The plot was original too and even though a bit silly with the whole seeing ghosts thing, it was placed in the back of my mind because all I cared about was seeing Ricky’s character Bertram Pincus, get the girl.

Not the best movie ever made but a really fun and satisfying  movie. And, if you are a fan of Ricky Gervais you have to see him in this.

No more Yes To Carrots!

Ok that statement is not entirely true. I still adore the lip balm and facial lotion. But last night on my way home I had to stop by the dreaded Walmart because I was out of shampoo and face soap. So, I lingered around their organic section for about an hour scoping ingredient lists trying to find something not laden with chemicals. I found this shampoo called Avalon Organics Awapuhi Mango Moisturizing Shampoo.

Not only was it free of parabens like the Yes To Carrots shampoo but it also had this to say:

Standards

• No sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, or other harsh chemicals
• No parabens, harsh preservatives, or grapefruit seed extract
• No synthetic fragrances or colors
• pH balanced
• 100% vegetarian ingredients and no animal testing

Signature ingredient: Derived from Hawaiian wild ginger, awapuhi softens and adds shine to hair while mango provides lush moisturizing and promotes cell rejuvenation for damaged hair.

Product description: Fortified with a rich elixir of awapuhi, mango and ylang ylang blossom to clean hair without stripping it of its precious oils, this shampoo will replenish moisture balance and add body and volume for lively, lush hair.

Features and benefits: For vibrant, supple hair, try this deep moisturizing shampoo formulated with aloe, awapuhi, mango, fragrant orange and ylang ylang. Use this shampoo daily to strengthen and protect the ends of your hair, to maximize softness and shine and to enhance manageability for soft, healthy hair.

Ok, so positively no SLS and even though it was a tad more expensive and smells kinda weird my hair feels way better with this than with any other shampoo I have ever used. It feels thick, lustrous, bouncy and shiny! Like old glamourous movie star hair used to look. I am in love. If only they could make it smell a bit better. But it is scented with natural ingredients so you have to get used to that. Also, my hair gets oily fast, and I was a bit worried because this is for normal/dry hair and says it’s deeply moisturizing. I was worried my hair would get weighed down and get greasy super fast but it seems good so far. I just used it last night before I went to bed and today around 11am. It is now 1:15 so when I go home tonight after work around 10 I will let you know how my hair stood up. My scalp and hair have been feeling a little itchy and dry because it’s so cold and I have two heaters blazing on me at work for 8 hours straight. Today my head feels like I dipped it in a cool spring. It just feels like it was intended to by nature.

Ok, also while I was at Walmart I was looking around for my Basis face soap but they were out. So, I purchased an Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleansing Bar. I love this too. More so than the Basis bar I was using before. My skin just feels perfect. Not tight, no residue, just perfectly natural and healthy and I looks more even toned too because it isn’t harsh and it’s not drying or irritating my skin at all. I have a few blemishes so I will let you know how it works on those spots and if it works to keep new spots from forming.

Also, it is pretty cheap. Like 2 bucks or something, and it will last a month probably. I might get one for the shower too to use on my chest and back to keep me clear all over if it works.

Yes To Carrots

I am always looking for ways to improve the quality of my life. I have tried to cut back on certain things I put in and on my body.

I recently discovered the Yes To Carrots brand and have tried several of their products.
The Yes To Carrots Shampoo really is amazing. It is a beautiful orange color and comes in a generous size for the price. $7.99 at my local Walgreen’s. The list of ingredients is packed full of organic goodies and minimal synthetic ingredients. It’s label states it has 26 minerals and trace elements. It is also paraben free which is something I have been trying to find in all of my beauty products. Here is a link to one person’s opinion on parabens and it’s good enough for me. http://www.thegoodhuman.com/2007/06/21/what-are-parabens-and-why-should-you-avoid-them/

The only thing I don’t like is that it contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Now, I am not sure if this ingredient is that bad but i would still like to avoid it if I can. It is rated a 3-4 moderate hazard on http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient.php?ingred06=706089

When I went to http://www.yes-to-carrots.com/?CategoryID=426#Ingredients%20List it has two ingredient lists. One has Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) and the other has Sodium Coceth Sulfate. Now the latter is a 0 low hazard on http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient.php?ingred06=706030&refurl=/product.php?prod_id=26328&&nothanks=1

I have no idea why there are two and I don’t know which ingredient I have in my shampoo at home. So, if it has Sodium Coceth Sulfate I guess can handle that.

Other than the SLS issue I love everything about this product line. The shampoo makes your hair feel so soft and manageable.

I have the lip balm in Carrot and it works like a dream. I have large lips and they are constantly getting chapped. This balm really conditions them and I have tried almost everything under the sun, even resorting to making my own at home. I think it was a little over $3  for a tube, but worth the money.

I also have the Yes To Tomatoes Totally Tranquil Facial Hydrating Lotion. This is for Oily/Combination skin. I normally don’t have an issue with moisture on my face because I am naturally oily but I use a retinoid product several times a week to keep my acne in check and to help with fine lines and acne scars and it can start to flake pretty bad sometimes. I keep this in my desk at work and when my face is nice and calm in the afternoon a put a couple pumps of this on. It feels kinda sticky at first but settles in nicely after a while. I hate wearing moisturizer at all so anything I put on I can “feel” and it annoys me but this stuff is 99.6% natural, paraben free, petroleum free, and SLS free, not to mention is smells amazing! So, when my face looks dry and cracked this is what I use to combat those issues. It was around $14 dollars at Walgreen’s but I got my shampoo half off when I purchased it with this so it made up for it.

I also have the Yes To Carrots Gentle Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. I got this as one  of my stocking stuffers from my husband. He knows I love this brand. I thought that was such a sweet little gift. It works pretty well. There are particles of apricot in it which I heard can make microscopic tears in your skin but I am not so sure how much of that is true or not. So, I have been using it and I just massage lightly onto my face. My husband has been using it too. This helps with the flaky skin  I sometimes get from using Tazorac. I have also sprinkled a little baking soda in my palm with it and it adds a nice enhanced scrubbing action. It leaves you skin feeling clean and fresh, and almost moisturized because it’s left feeling nice and supple.

So, overall I am very pleased with the quality of Yes To Carrots’ products. They are reasonably priced and are packed with a lot of nutrients to help keep you skin and hair healthy. I would recommend these products to anyone.

Dancing Bears

I know, most people wouldn’t dream of having this up in their house but I love it.

12-19-dancing-bears.jpg

I found this on www.apartmenttherapy.com someone was asking about dancing bear prints and where to find them.

Apparently a lot of people are into this but I have never seen dancing bear artwork before.

I would love to have these cute bears in a cozy guest room or in a study(that is if I had a house with these rooms)

Yellow Dressers

This is my first post. 🙂

I keep thinking about the 2 dressers that my dad gave me a few years back. I really want to paint them yellow. I will have to sand them and prime them, and then paint them yellow. It will be a lot of work I know, but I really enjoy doing things like that. Plus my husband will probably help me. I think it would be a fun project to do together. I don’t really have the time or money to do it right now though. Hopefully soon!

This is the yellow I was thinking of painting them

It is a big departure from the look we have going on now. I am hoping this will impart a more playful and focused sense of style in our house, rather than the look of hand-me-down furniture we have going on now.

I was also struggling with what hardware to put on them. I really like the vintage glass knobs but the darker metal ones in this pic(above) look really nice too. The darker metal pulls  look more rustic and country. I really like these glass pulls(below) but the ones on the dressers now move and lay flat against the drawer face. I guess I will consult someone before I purchase anything

I am also in love with these little Depression green colored knobs. I am not sure how the green will look with the yellow though. I just love the jewel toned colors and shapes of these vintage style glass knobs. They remind me of my grandmother’s house. She has a large collection of Depression glass and I would always look at them when I was a kid. I always thought they were so pretty.

The dressers are now the original dark cherry stain with some sort of clear coat on top. They are pretty old though and have tons of scratches(from our cats trying to sleep in the drawers) and are just depressing to look at. However, they are really nice solid wood and with a bit of love I think could bring new life into our home. I am just really glad my husband is totally cool with painting them yellow. Some guys might think it is kinda girly I guess, more so than a dark wood. But he is great like that. I think they will look great, especially with the beautiful quilt we have on our bed. I got it from Restoration hardware a few years ago for Christmas from my mom. It is a silvery bluish green with gold toned flowers covering it. I wish I had a pic of it. Oh well.
